Assyriska is an Assyrian based team in Sweden's top football league, the Allsvenskan, playing in the town of Södertälje. It was founded in 1974. The club was promoted to the Allsvenskan in 2004 when it finished second in the second division behind Örgryte IS but was unexpectedly promoted a few days later when Örebro SK was relegated because of poor finances.
Assyriska is often viewed as a substitute national team by the 1-2 million strong Assyrian population, which originated in Syria and Iraq but is now distributed in many countries, and the club has fans from all round the world.
